Easy Steps to Preventing work at home distractions:
Get a separate business phone
line installed! It is probably a good idea to establish set hours for
yourself. Having a separate business line will help you determine if you
are receiving a personal call or business call. It may also be a good
idea to have some features such as call waiting installed. Make sure you
have an answering machine or system for after hours! It's not a good
idea to give out your personal telephone number to anyone associated
with your work at home business. This will make your work at home
experience a much less distracting one. When you are registering a
business phone line should ask that the phone company not publish your
home address. In addition make sure when you are registering your
business telephone that your address is not automatically published in
the yellow pages or white pages. This will help prevent salespersons
from visiting your home.
If you can get a separate mail
box for your work at home business. Use that address for business and/or
professional reasons. You can find companies who rent mail boxes in your
local yellow pages under "Mail Box" or a similar category.
Your
work at home business may
involve face to face dealings with people (such as making a sales call
or filling out order forms), make it a policy to always meet somewhere
else other than your home. Either meet them at their home, Starbucks,
some kind of coffee cafe, or a restaurant. If you meet a customer at
your home he or she may decide to stop by without warning which can be a
real inconvenience!
When you get a business license
for your work at home business, the information can be made public! Ask
the licensing agent if you can avoid making your home phone number
public. This will help prevent calls from merchant service providers,
insurance agents, business supply agents and others!
In addition, Use
a separate email address
for professional purposes. There are email services available on the
internet that will give you an email address for free. It's a good idea
not to give out your personal email address to an employee, customer, or
a supplier. If you have a small business web site you can use that
address.
These tips should help you
prevent some very annoying work at home distractions!
